The Current Gets Its Cake (And Eats It Too)

Chickens, last night’s birthday celebration for 89.3 The Current at First Avenue was completely nuts.  Our intrepid girl (and gurhl) reporters were out in force (and those that weren’t were watching via the live stream – which was a masterstroke of an idea and long overdue).  The Ave. was teeming with hipsters, music lovers (Kyle Matteson), music scenesters (John Wallace, Kareem Ahmed), the press (Andrea Swenson of City Pages, Leslie Plesser of vita.mn) and Current staff (Mac Wilson, Barb Abney, Dave Campbell, Lindsay Kimball and a lot more).  One of our favorite moments was the gathering of the Radio K marketing directors of past and present: the former category featuring Mächen Davis (now promotions director for First Ave.) and Ali Lozoff (now marketing czar for The Current).

Concert highlights include:

  • Trampled By Turtles had everyone dancing and then had everyone cheering when they covered Cloud Cult (you will recall that they were covering for Cloud Cult who pulled out to Craig Minowa‘s illness).
  • Speaking of covers, there was not a dry eye in the house when Brother Ali (after whipping the crowd into a frenzy) did a stirring rendition of Eyedea & Abilities “Smile.”  And cheers to Ant for being on the turntable for Ali.
  • The Non-Average White Band Award goes to Jeremy Messersmith and his band all dressed in white (and flawless as usual).
  • Free Energy gave an energized set which ended with all the artists and the Current staff on-stage for a “We Are the World” take on “Funkytown” with Dave Campbell’s scene-stealing cowbell skills.
