Pride 2011

Oh sweet sweet chickens!  This weekend was a blur of glitter, sequins, pasties, heels, and glamourous women…

…No, it wasn’t the Best of Midwest Burlesque festival.  It was Pride, sillies.

Since there was so damn much going on this weekend (and we’re STILL hearing about it), we’re going to do this bullet point style.  Ready?

First off a heartfelt BRAVO to the state of New York for passing the marriage equity act.  Now why can’t we (with the gayest city in America) make this happen here in Minnesota?  Other high point was when the Intrepid Gurhl Reporters all broke down and saw the rainbow colored Empire State Building.  Not to be outdone, the I 35W Bridge went all Technicolor on us as well as the Target Tower revealing its fancy new lighting system.

Saturday was of course all about The Park.  Loring Park that is.  Literally we could not swing a dead cat without running into someone we knew and/or loved.  Oh look, there’s Marina Maric looking sleek and stylish.  Over there is Christopher Straub and his boyfriend (though our reporter forgot to ask the big question: Is he going to be on Project Runway All Stars this season?!?).  A few steps over we found the lovely Ryan Farrell and Jason Matheson looking adorable.

Saturday Night was a mad whirl (or is it Twirl) around the town starting with the park (bien sur!) for Deborah Gibson.  Now we know it is a Pride tradition nationally to fetch some female singer on the wane (thought to her credit she delivered on her set) but (and we are aware that TC Pride has barely anything in its coffers) wouldn’t it be great if we could get a big name for the pride?  Paging Robyn.

Of course later Saturday night was the night everyone and their mother ended up at Jetset Bar.  Our hearts went out to the bartenders who were in the weeds (several bartenders from other venues who were partying that night were seen working the door and helping with the bussing).  Bryan Gerard was serving, as one Gurhl Reporter described it “80s Diva Realness” and then we danced the night away with the 30 Days of Biking boys. (Special shout-out to the one and only Zachariah Schapp who came to our rescue on Sunday afternoon with his pedi-cab.)

Sunday Morning was all about The Parade.  Once again, our beloved mayor went down more than once; First he entered with the Dykes on Bikes, then with the anti-gay marriage amendment protesters.  We ran into afterwards the lovely and talented Bebe Zahara Benet, who looked glorious. She then told us about her time on RuPaul’s Drag U this season and that it was amazing!

Speaking of our queens, Miss Bitch Flowers (née Richard Anderson) held court with her annual Bitch ‘n’ Brunch on the roof of Seven.  The annual benefit for The Aliveness Project has turned into one of the major events of the Pride season.  The rooftop was filled to capacity with hot men, hot tunes (thank you again DJ Sheik), and fabulous ladies biological (Erica Mayer, Kris Vruno Huson, et al) and psychological (the lovely and talented Krystal Kleer was there plugging her show at Bryant Lake Bowl on July 15).

That evening we all descended for the clusterf*ck that is The Saloon‘s Block Party.  Our Intrepid Reporters held it together but things just devolved into a gloriously drunken mess.

And that, chickens, is Pride 2011 in a nutshell.  We would like to take the moment to thank all the Intrepid Girl (and Gurhl) Reporters who earned their keep by hauling ass around town to get the stories.  Brava, Ladies! And “Ladies!” Now go have some coffee and Advil; you’ve deserved it!

I had no idea I was dancing with the Minneapolitan. Who were you among the anonymous, shades-in-the-dark, electronic-beat masses?
